The technical report UNI/TR 11917, issued on July 6, 2023 and prepared under the jurisdiction of CTI (Comitato Termotecnico Italiano) federated with UNI (Ente Italiano di Normazione), defines the “Guidelines for the safety and environment of landfill biogas plants” and provides several recommendations on the capture, extraction and conveyance of biogas to energy recovery.

This technical report is now a valuable source of information for all those involved in the production, capture, extraction and conveying of landfill biogas to energy recovery, in order to avoid pollution and reduce emission limit values of both odorigenic nature and greenhouse gases, helping to solve these technical challenges and issues.

The UNI/TR 11917 guideline is basically divided into three main sections dealing with biogas production and capture, biogas extraction, and biogas conveyance to energy recovery, respectively. It lists the typological elements of the landfill biogas plant with specific reference to existing technologies.

And this is where automation systems for biogas capture come into play, which optimize the efficiency of the entire capture plant present in the landfill, acting as the “mind/brain” of the process.

These automation systems, recently introduced in landfills, regulate the extraction of biogas in order to eliminate and, where elimination is not possible, minimize the safety and environmental problems due to biogas.
